What is Personal Development?
Personal development is a broad term used in the learning and development environment to mean all activities undertaken to enhance an individual's hard (e.g. technical and professional skills and knowledge) and soft skills (e.g. interpersonal or communication skills) that pertain to their profession and role.
Within your organisation, training and development needs that are based on your organisation's vision and objectives, can then come from a Training needs analysis, 360° exercise or perhaps even a development centre.
These in turn will highlight leadership and management development and personal development needs.
You might find that outside of this, you need additional training and development in order to support a promotion or a career move or as part of your own continuing professional development, such as:
- developing strengths or talents
- improving technical or professional knowledge
- identifying or improving potential
- improving self-awareness
- building employability or human capital
- fulfilling aspirations
