Middle Management Qualifications

Levels 4 and 5

The step up to managing managers can be a very challenging one. The middle manager often has an operational role as well as an equally important strategic one. Getting the balance right can have fantastic effects on your business and team performance as well as reducing the stress on your middle managers.

Who is a middle management qualification for?

Middle managers can be distinguished from the first line managers below them by their wider span of control, counted in the tens and possibly extending to a few hundreds of people. A tier of team leaders or first line managers will frequently mediate their links with the people for whom they have responsibility. This means that they will have a similar or even smaller number of people reporting directly to them than your managers nearer the front line, but will be accountable for the performance of all those over whom they have control, direct or indirect.

Flexible content to suit your organisation's needs

The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 4 Award in Management is unique and is designed for those who want to progress from a Level 3 qualification but may find Level 5 too rigorous as a step up. The credits from Level 4 can be carried forward to a Level 5 certificate or diploma.

The ILM Level 5 qualifications aim to give practising or potential middle managers the foundation for their formal development in the role.

They include a diverse range of optional units, allowing organisations to custom build a qualification focusing on the key areas of team leading that are most relevant to their staff development needs (which might well have been identified from a development centre, a training needs analysis or 360° feedback).

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the management role
  • Managing improvement
  • Making a financial case
  • Leading innovation and change
  • Managing projects

Award, Certificate or Diploma?

You can choose an Award, Certificate or Diploma at Level 5. The Award is usually run over 7 days depending on your choice of units and delegates will have to commit to analysing their performance, their organisation and what is needed to be successful in their management role.

The Certificate broadens the skills and knowledge of the practising manager in a practical way and the Diploma is very comprehensive, requiring a strong degree of commitment from the individuals and a minimum of 220 guided learning hours.

Middle management development is critical, providing the operational and strategic links in the business. Our programmes are specifically designed to take into the account the tensions and often critical choices middle managers have to make in the day to day operation of your organisation.
