E-learning

Producing e-learning covering Inclusion and Unconscious Bias topics, which resonates equally well across global teams can be a real challenge. Each organisation has it's own combination of cultures, languages, perceptions, attitudes and biases to serve, manage and address - and for global organisations in particular, 'off-the-shelf' solutions simply don't offer the quality of engagement required.

We specialise in developing Diversity & Inclusion and Unconscious Bias e-learning courses tailored to your organisation's specific needs. Working closely with our global network of subject matter experts, our learning technology specialists have developed comprehensive templates for Diversity & Inclusion and Unconscious Bias courses, which can be adapted to your exact requirements. Languages, exercises, case studies and scenarios can all be adapted to more closely reflect the culture of your organisation and the challenges you wish to address.

Modules can be added, removed or adapted to suit. Individual modules from each of the two template courses can be combined to create an individual solution. This flexibility allows our e-learning to be used either as a complete stand alone programme, or as an element within a wider, blended solution.

The following is an outline of our template Unconscious Bias E-learning course, together with example modules from a 'generic' version of the template course.

Unconscious Bias

Our Bespoke Unconscious Bias E-learning is based around a template storyboard consisting of six learning modules and a toolkit of supporting resources.

The aim of the template course is to;

  • Increase the learners’ awareness of the concept of Unconscious Bias
  • Enable learners to recognise bias within themselves
  • Enable learners to recognise the impact of their personal bias on others
  • Ensure the learner understands bias is natural, yet manageable
  • Empower the learner to manage their own bias
Unconscious Bias E-learning: The Science Behind Bias

Learning Modules

The six learning modules are:

  1. Why recognising our Unconscious Bias is so important
  2. What is Unconscious Bias?
  3. The science behind Bias
  4. Recognising our Bias
  5. The effects of our Bias on others
  6. Managing our Bias

This template represents the course in its entirety as originally developed by The People Development Team, and has a target duration of 45 minutes.

Each aspect of the template can be customised to produce a completely bespoke package, reflecting the learning objectives, scenarios and case studies required.

Customisations range from branding and simple removal of individual frames from the original template, to full globalisation; featuring multiple languages, themed exercises, and cultural adaptations. We have found that global clients with a very diverse geographical presence, sometimes require more than one version of the same course in order for some messages to translate equally well across cultures. Differing cultural perceptions of physical or learning disabilities, socio-economic classes or castes for example, can lead to differences in the level of engagement experienced across cultures. Our flexible approach ensures that with a few small changes, the level of engagement remains high across the whole audience, with minimal increase in costs - something 'off-the-shelf' solutions just can't do.

This incredible flexibility also allows us to centre a course around a particular bias; gender, age, ethnicity and sexuality perhaps - or to focus on one single demographic.

Toolkit

The toolkit is a powerful way to consolidate the knowledge gained in the learning modules. It features a range of exercises and information which empower the learner in the management of their own bias.

The materials are grouped around three central themes;

  • Awareness
  • Bias
  • Change

Designed as a supporting resource, the toolkit contains guidance and exercises to help learners in the ongoing management of their biases. These materials does not necessarily have to be completed at the same time as the learning modules, but can be used as an ad-hoc reference, perhaps hosted on an intranet or learning portal.

A variety of tools assist the learner in managing their bias, one example being ‘Re-framing’ - where the subject or nature of a bias is re-assessed through a series of thought provoking questions, leading the learner to see the subject of bias in a new light, or become to understand the source of their bias.

Race for Opportunity’s ‘Know Yourself Tool’

The Objective: Create an informative, yet quickly accessible way for users to assess their personal biases.

In this example, the template course was adapted to form one element within a wider programme.

The ‘Know Yourself Tool’ forms one of a five-part toolkit, designed to enable both employers and employees to consider how their decisions impact on their workforce and customer base.

Based on the original course template; the content and structure was heavily customised, reducing the emphasis on the science and impact of bias and focussing on the concept of a ‘sorting exercise’ adapted from the ‘Recognising Bias’ module.

The end result features an exercise which allows visitors to sort prospective employees into categories such as ‘Leadership & Management’ and ‘Operations’ based on an image and some basic information about their age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and level of disability.

The results of the exercise are immediately fed back as they apply to each demographic, and the learner is quickly able to build an image of their biases.
