Coaching

Influencing inclusion and diversity means capitalising on an individual's difference, but to become a true leader, we need to look into our own behaviours. It is recognised that internal and external influences are displayed in our actions suggesting that unconscious bias is one of the main drivers of human behaviours. The People Development Team's coaching interventions allow the coachees to reflect on their own unconscious bias and the impact it can have on their leadership, decisions and the culture within which they work.

Coaching can take varying forms but all enable an individual to increase their self understanding and give them tools and strategies for managing biases effectively. The result of is heightened awareness of one's own motivations and biases, leading to strengthening their inclusive style.

What to expect from a coaching intervention

The initial assumption our coaching sessions are based on is that having bias is normal; it is part of our gathered experiences that shape our personality. The aim of the session is not to change the bias, but increase awareness to it and thus help improve our leadership and decision making practices.

The coach and coachee will then explore the willingness to adapt and alter bias, other potential biases and then look at the bias within the organisation.

The coaching interactions are coupled with exploring micro-behaviours and ways of dealing with them. Working through pre-developed scenarios, we look at verbal language, body language as well as cognitive strategies that will evoke change.

Further sessions are designed to have greater impact on personal behaviour and performance - they explore where the bias is rooted and the source of beliefs linked to it. These sessions will only be taken forward with those who are comfortable challenging their bias and will go deeper to discover its impact on their own behaviour as well as others' and how to deal with it more readily.
