First Line Managers

Becoming a First Line Manager is normally the first step into formal management, producing a set of challenges and responsibilities that are far wider than that of the team leader. Ensuring that the first line manager is fully equipped to deal with their role (and for future roles) is vital to developing the managerial and leadership capability of your business.

First Line Management development is often overlooked, even though it provides the foundation for careers and the supports the deployment of management practice across the organisation.

The typical first line manager has a wider span of control, responsibility and authority and a greater degree of autonomy than a team leader. They will usually be planning work looking several weeks or months ahead and be operating with less supervision and control by others.

The People Development Team can devise programmes that specifically meet your needs for effective First Line Manager performance.  This training can be delivered face-to-face or via e-learning, distance learning or in any combination of these.  Where appropriate your programme can be accredited or endorsed.

Topics covered include:

  • Delegation
  • Managing projects
  • Organising and negotiating
  • Leadership
  • Planning change

Level 3 accreditation is available for first line managers in either Award, Certificate or Diploma formats from either the Institute of Leadership and Management or the Chartered Management Institute.  The table below summarises the requirements for each.
